I first experienced these extraordinary beans during a Black Crown Coffee Collective Guest Shift, where Alsu featured Jairo Arcila’s stunning creations: the Chiroso (with its caramelized cherry, toffee, and lime notes) and the Passionfruit co-ferment (bursting with maple syrup and tangerine). To say these two coffees marked my taste buds in the most wonderful way is an understatement—they completely redefined what I expect from a cup of coffee. Knowing I was heading out for a long-term stay in Accra, Ghana, I immediately acquired a bag of each to bring with me. That decision turned out to be the best choice I could have made, because these particular coffees have been my absolute savior. Let's be honest: I refuse to drink bad coffee. Even when staying at a hotel with a full-service breakfast buffet, I will bypass their brew entirely if it isn't up to par. Working in an austere environment that isn't exactly known for SCA-grade specialty coffee, having these beans on hand has kept me sane and caffeinated. During the guest shift, Alsu showcased the beans across multiple extraction methods, pour-over, espresso, and cold brew. While I am still a novice, a recent pour-over class gave me the exact foundation I needed to excel. Armed with that knowledge, I am incredibly proud of the amazing extractions I've been able to pull from these beans myself. Because I had to travel light for this trip, my setup back at the base is modest but highly tactical. I rely on a hand grinder and a temperature-controlled electric kettle to precisely follow the published brew recipes. For my espresso fix, my portable Outin Nano travel machine and Outin Fino grinder do an exceptional job. Whether I am brewing a clean pour-over, pressing an Aeropress, or pulling a travel espresso, these beans consistently deliver a spectacular, vibrant cup. If you need a high-caliber specialty coffee that truly shines across multiple brewing methods, or if you simply need a reliable, world, class daily rescue from a coffee desert, these beans are worth every single penny. They have been my saving grace!
