Clever Angel Villanueva

Clever Ángel Villanueva Rafael is a young producer, he has dedicated two decades of his life to coffee cultivation, having started working the land when he was 21. His one-hectare plot is located in Miraflores del Norte, Huabal, Jaén, in the Cajamarca, Peru region, where he grows Caturra, Pache, and Catimor varieties at 1,740 m.a.s.l.

Clever Ángel masters the Washed process. He aims for clean and high-quality profiles. His method begins by allowing the coffee cherry to rest for 12 hours. After pulping, he initiates a controlled fermentation of 36 hours in fermentation bags.

Subsequently, he performs three washes on the coffee, an airing period of 4 hours, and then proceeds to slow drying in his solar dryer for an average of 15 days. Finally, the dried coffee rests for another 15 days before being delivered for storage, ensuring profile quality.

Clever Ángel manages his crop with care: he performs annual selective pruning and applies sustainable fertilization twice a year. For pest control, such as rust, he uses biological products.
In the last two years, he has invested in improving his wet mill module and solar dryer, managing to increase both productivity and sensory quality.

However, he faces common industry challenges: climate change variation, which brings new pests, and the scarcity of labor, which increases production costs. Despite this, his greatest achievement of the last harvest has been the increase in quality and productivity, reflected in a better price for his coffee.
